The iPhone Duo has been announced, but it is not on sale yet
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. Pre-orders are scheduled to open on October 16, with deliveries and retail availability beginning on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions. A further 28 markets are due to receive it on October 30. As of September 11, nobody has accumulated meaningful long-term ownership experience with the phone. Apple has given the Duo a titanium structure, a hinge containing more than 100 components, reinforced internal ribs and protective coatings for the folding display. It also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, specified as up to six metres of water for 30 minutes under laboratory conditions. These are encouraging specifications, particularly for a foldable. They do not reveal how the inner screen will respond to years of opening, closing, pocket debris, fingernails and stylus use. Apple rates the phone for up to 24 hours of typical use, 31 hours of video playback on the inner display or 44 hours on the outer display. Those figures are not directly comparable with a normal day involving repeated folding, 5G, cameras and two active apps. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. It can keep eight or more eSIM profiles and use two simultaneously, but it has no physical SIM slot. - Accepts first-generation hardware risk and is willing to buy suitable protection
It is better to keep separate devices—or wait for a later Duo generation—if you prioritise a light phone, Apple Pencil Pro, long drawing sessions, mature tablet applications or proven multi-year durability.
The sensible buying decision in September 2026 is to wait. The Duo has credible potential as a phone-and-tablet replacement, but pre-ordering means committing before independent reviews can test its battery, hinge, inner display and third-party app experience. Once those results arrive, the decision becomes simple: buy it if eliminating a second device materially improves your daily routine, not merely because the folding display is new.
