Map of Slovakia: interactive, hiking, and offline maps (guides + tips)

A map of Slovakia today doesn’t just mean “paper and a compass.” We have access to official state map data, detailed hiking layers, and offline navigation for mountains or places with no signal. Below you’ll find an overview of proven options, practical how-tos, and short videos to help you master the basics quickly.

Interactive state maps: ZBGIS (cadastre, orthophotos, addresses)

The official “baseline” for Slovakia is the ZBGIS Map Client operated by the Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre Authority of the Slovak Republic. It’s a web app where you can switch between thematic layers (real-estate cadastre, addresses, geodetic points, orthophotos, and more), measure areas and distances directly on the map, or export map extracts. In practice, this means that at one address you can see the parcel, ownership records, building numbers, and an aerial image. A detailed service description and the “Go to service” link can be found on slovensko.sk (the state portal). (Slovensko)

When to use ZBGIS:

  • you need official cadastre and address-point data,
  • you want accurate area measurement (e.g., a plot of land) or to check orthophotos,
  • you need a dataset that is authoritative for public administration and planning/design work in Slovakia.

Hiking maps of Slovakia: routes, elevation gain, and landmarks

For hiking and cycling, two solutions have proven reliable:

  • Mapy.cz (web + app): offers a detailed outdoor layer with marked trails, contour lines, and hiking points including shelters, mountain huts, and viewpoints. It also works great offline (see the section below). The official help explains in detail how offline maps work and what they include. (Help Mapy.com)
  • Freemap Slovakia (web based on OpenStreetMap): the Slovak OSM community has long been rendering hiking, cycling, and cross-country skiing maps. The advantage is fast updates to routes, signposts, and local points of interest—community members continuously refine the data. (freemap.sk, wiki.openstreetmap.org)

Route-planning tip: hiking layers can account for elevation gain and surface type; on longer ridge traverses it’s also worth keeping an eye on protected areas and seasonal closures (these don’t always appear in commercial navigation apps—so it pays to check the official websites of the national parks).

Offline maps of Slovakia: when there’s no signal

Mapy.cz (mobile app)

  • You can download offline maps after signing in (Seznam account).
  • In the free version you get 1 country (including regions) for free; in Premium the number of countries is unlimited.
  • The offline base does not include the aerial map (orthophoto), but it does include outdoor, standard, winter, and traffic maps; search, planning, and navigation are supported without internet. Details are described in the official Mapy.com help. (Help Mapy.com)

Google Maps (mobile app)

  • Select Profile → Offline maps → Select your own map and download an area.
  • Offline, the app will get you to your destination as long as the entire route lies within the downloaded area.
  • Limitations: without internet, public transit, cycling, and walking routes aren’t available; live traffic and real-time alternate routes don’t work. Google recommends updating offline maps regularly (automatically or manually), otherwise expired maps will stop working. (Google Support)

Quick pick: which map is the “right one”?

  • Official and ownership information (cadastre, orthophotos) → ZBGIS (state map client). (Slovensko)
  • Hiking and cycling outdoors, even with no signal → Mapy.cz (offline), alternatively Freemap Slovakia online. (Help Mapy.com, freemap.sk)
  • Driving in town and addresses, offline car navigation → Google Maps (keep the offline limits in mind). (Google Support)

Mini guide: ZBGIS for beginners (web)

  1. Open the ZBGIS Map Client from the slovensko.sk portal (the “Go to service” button).
  2. In the menu, select a theme (e.g., Real-estate Cadastre or Orthophoto).
  3. Search for an address/parcel/ownership sheet, toggle layers, and use the measurement tools for distance/area.
The official description and service landing page: slovensko.sk. (Slovensko)

Mini guide: Mapy.cz offline

  1. In the app, open Menu → Offline maps and sign in.
  2. Select Slovakia (or regions only) and download.
  3. In free mode you get 1 country; Premium unlocks unlimited countries/regions.
  4. Keep maps updated (Mapy.cz releases packages about 7× per year; the app will notify you). (Help Mapy.com)

Mini guide: Google Maps offline

  1. Profile → Offline maps → Select your own map and adjust the area frame.
  2. Enable Auto-update; without updates, maps will expire after a while.
  3. Keep in mind that in offline mode you won’t have transit/bike/walk routes and traffic data. (Google Support)

Useful tricks and common misconceptions

  • “Offline means everything works.” Not in Google Maps: offline mode doesn’t support public transit, walking, or cycling, and you won’t get traffic restrictions. For longer trips, download a larger area (the whole region) and keep an eye on updates. (Google Support)
  • “Commercial apps have the best trail markings.” Often it’s the other way around: community-maintained data (Freemap/OSM) is frequently the freshest on the ground—if a trail is rerouted nearby, the community usually fixes it quickly. For a solid overview in Slovakia, try Freemap Slovakia. (freemap.sk, wiki.openstreetmap.org)
  • “I can download orthophotos offline anywhere.” In Mapy.cz, offline maps are without the aerial layer (that remains online). To verify a specific object precisely (extensions, buildings), use ZBGIS with orthophotos on a computer. (Help Mapy.com, Slovensko)

Recommended setup for traveling around Slovakia

  • In the city: Google Maps (addresses, POIs, traffic data); just in case, download an offline area. (Google Support)
  • In the mountains: Mapy.cz with offline Slovakia on your phone + on a computer, use Freemap to review alternative routes and key waypoints (huts, shelters). (Help Mapy.com, freemap.sk)
  • Land/real-estate work: ZBGIS (cadastre, measurements, orthophotos) – the state’s authoritative reference source. (Slovensko)

Conclusion

If you want all of Slovakia covered even without signal, the combination of Mapy.cz (offline) for the outdoors, Google Maps (offline) for driving, and ZBGIS for verifying official data works extremely well. Don’t forget to update offline packages regularly, and when planning in the mountains, check trail status in community maps. (Help Mapy.com, Google Support, freemap.sk)
