If you’re heading to Prague, public transport is the easiest way to get around the city. Below you’ll find an overview of tickets, real prices in euros, where and how to buy a 24-hour ticket, tips for the PID Lítačka app (Prague public transport app), and practical advice (airport, inspections, discounts).
Ticket prices in Prague (2025)
Converted approximately at an exchange rate of €1 ≈ CZK 24.54 as of 26 Aug 2025. PID/DPP prices are unchanged for 2025 (24-hour and 72-hour tickets are still valid). You’ll find detailed fares and conditions on the official PID website.
Fare source: Tickets and fare (PID) – current price and validity tables.
- 30 min: ~€1.22
- 90 min: ~€1.63
- 24 hours (prague public transport 24-hour ticket price): ~€4.89
- 72 hours: ~€13.45
Validity: within Prague on metro, trams, buses, ferries, selected trains (PID); exceptions: heritage lines K/41/42 and the Airport Express (AE). The official PID fare overview explains more. (See “Tickets and fare” on PID.cz.)
Where to buy a 24-hour ticket (Prague public transport)
- In the PID Lítačka app – the most convenient (see below). Once activated, the ticket becomes valid after 1 minute (a security delay). It’s best to activate it in advance, before the vehicle arrives / before entering the metro. (Officially explained on the “How and where to buy tickets” page – PID.)
- At contactless terminals on trams and buses + in the metro – pay contactless (card/Apple Pay/Google Pay). The ticket is valid immediately from purchase and doesn’t need validation.
- At ticket machines and sales points – paper tickets (30/90/24/72 h). Don’t forget to validate when you first enter (yellow validator).
- SMS ticket – Prague also has SMS tickets; details (number and codes) are available on the DPP website under fares.
Detailed purchase options (locations, validators, and rules) are clearly summarized in How and where to buy tickets on PID.cz.
PID Lítačka: the Prague public transport app you’ll want to have
The PID Lítačka app (Android/iOS) can:
- buy short-term tickets (30/90/24/72 h) as well as long-term passes,
- plan routes and recommend the best-value ticket,
- pay for parking in zoned areas,
- save a card and pay in one tap.
Watch out for the 1-minute “window” after activation: during this minute you can’t cancel the ticket anymore, but it’s not valid yet – an inspector can issue a fine. That’s why you should activate it ahead of time. (The official rule is described in “How and where to buy tickets” – PID.)
How to buy a 24-hour ticket in the app (quick guide):
- Open PID Lítačka → Buy ticket.
- Select Prague (Praha) and 24 hours.
- Choose activation: immediately, manually later, or schedule a time.
- Pay by card/Apple Pay/Google Pay → the ticket is valid 1 minute after activation.
Václav Havel Airport → city centre: which ticket is valid?
- Regular PID (24 h / 72 h / 90 min) is valid on bus 119 → metro A (Nádraží Veleslavín) as well as bus 100 → metro B (Zličín) and then throughout Prague.
- Airport Express (AE) is a special route (Prague Main Station ↔ Airport) with a separate fare – PID tickets are not valid here.
- AE price (one-way): ~€4.07 (CZK 100), buy from the driver, valid on AE only.
- Official info: AE Line (DPP) – intervals, route, prices.
Discounts and free travel (briefly)
- Children under 6: free (with a person aged 10+).
- Children 6–10 and 10–15: free within Prague (with proof of age; specifics apply for trains).
- Seniors 65+: free within Prague (with proof of age).
- Seniors 60–65: half-price short-term tickets (e.g. 24 h ~ €2.44).
Overview of categories and conditions: the official Tickets and fare (PID) page.
Ticket inspections and fines: what to watch out for
- Proof-of-payment system (no turnstiles): you must have a valid ticket before entering the paid metro area / when boarding.
- Fine without a ticket: base amount CZK 1500 (
€61), reduced to CZK 1000 (€41) if paid on the spot or within 15 days.
Official amounts: Surcharge amount (DPP).
Tip: for paper tickets, validate only once; in the app, wait out the 1-minute window before entering.
When a 24 h vs. 72 h ticket makes sense
- 24 h (≈ €4.89): if you’re doing at least 3–4 rides in a day (city centre ↔ castle, Vyšehrad, Holešovice/Karlín, getting back in the evening).
- 72 h (≈ €13.45): a 2–3 day city break – unlimited transfers without worrying about time and zones + luggage is free with 24 h+ tickets.
City passes: when you want an “all-in-one” option
- Prague Visitor Pass – the official city pass with unlimited public transport (including travel to/from the airport) plus entry/discounts to 70+ places. It’s worth it if you plan multiple paid attractions per day.
- CoolPass – focused more on admissions/activities; public transport is usually not included (combine it with a PID ticket).
(When selling city passes, you can use affiliate hotels, and city passes are a common “monetization” pillar in travel content.)
Accommodation tips near the metro (monetization: hotels)
- Old Town / Můstek (A/B) – walkable to the centre, easy transfers.
- Anděl (B) – great connections to Smíchov/Hradčany, plenty of restaurants.
- Florenc (B/C) – close to the bus station, quick transfer to the main station.
