Imagine waiting at a bus stop. The bus arrives on time and the driver pulls up right in front of you. But the doors do not open for you to board because that particular stop is for passengers getting off only. The opposite situation may seem equally absurd: you are sitting on a bus and it stops where you need to get off, but according to the timetable, the stop is for boarding only.
From 15 July 2026, selected services on routes between Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Vrbové and Piešťany will operate under restricted stopping rules. At some stops in the Trnava Region, passengers may only board, while at others they may only get off. This is neither a nationwide rule nor a decision made by the driver, but a condition linked to an agreement and transport funding arrangements between two self-governing regions.
Which bus routes are affected by the new rules?
The change affects two regional bus routes operated by SAD Trenčín: route 30760, connecting Nové Mesto nad Váhom with Vrbové, and route 30765, which runs from Nové Mesto nad Váhom through Považany, Horná Streda and Pobedim to Piešťany.
Both routes cross the boundary between the Trenčín and Trnava self-governing regions. The restrictions begin to apply at selected stops after the buses enter the Trnava Region. According to the operator, travel within the Trenčín Region remains unaffected by the change.
SAD Trenčín announced that special symbols appear next to some departure times in the timetable. These indicate whether a particular service allows passengers only to board or only to get off at a given stop. It is therefore not enough to check the route and arrival time. Passengers must also review the notes and symbols for the specific service.
How does an alighting-only stop work?
If a stop is designated for alighting only, the bus may stop there and open its doors for passengers already on board. However, people waiting at the stop cannot board that service.
To someone standing by the road, the situation may seem completely illogical. The bus arrives, stops and may even have plenty of empty seats. Nevertheless, the driver must not carry the waiting passenger if their journey does not comply with the service’s approved operating rules.
This is therefore neither a request stop nor a case of the bus being full. The decisive factor is the note in the timetable. The restriction applies regardless of how full the vehicle is.
How does a boarding-only stop work?
The reverse applies at a stop designated for boarding only. The driver may stop and pick up new passengers, but those already on the bus are not supposed to get off there under the approved timetable.
Passengers must therefore check before boarding whether they are allowed to get off at their destination on that particular service. If they overlook the restriction, the bus may stop at their intended destination, but they may have to remain on board until the next stop where alighting is permitted.
This system may be particularly confusing for older people, children, occasional passengers or anyone unaccustomed to studying the explanatory notes beneath a timetable. The fact that a bus stops at a particular location no longer guarantees that passengers can both board and get off there.
The biggest changes on route 30760 to Vrbové
On selected services on route 30760 from Nové Mesto nad Váhom to Vrbové, several stops in the Trnava Region are designated for alighting only. These are Ostrov, rázcestie; Krakovany, štadión; Krakovany, rázcestie; and Vrbové, Piešťanská.
Passengers waiting at these stops may therefore not be allowed to board a bus heading to Vrbové, even if it stops to let other passengers off. In the opposite direction, several of these stops are primarily for boarding only. The exception is expected to be Krakovany, rázcestie, where passengers on selected services can still both board and get off.
Passengers who miss their final permitted stop for getting off may also face problems. If they fail to get off at Očkov, their next opportunity may not come until the terminus in Vrbové’s main square, approximately seven kilometres farther away.
Route 30765 to Piešťany brings even more restrictions
The situation is more complicated on route 30765 between Nové Mesto nad Váhom and Piešťany. On selected weekday services, the restrictions affect Bašovce, Veľké Orvište and several stops within Piešťany.
Towards Piešťany, these stops may be primarily for alighting only. Passengers wishing to use the bus for a shorter journey within the Trnava Region may therefore not be allowed to board. In the opposite direction, the arrangement is reversed and the stops may be designated for boarding only.
According to the published timetable, some services do not call at Piešťany, Mliekarenská or Piešťany, Horný cintorín at all. On weekends and public holidays, the rules are less restrictive at most affected stops, and passengers can once again both board and get off on several services. However, the specific day and service number are always decisive.
Why did the regions introduce such an unusual restriction?
The reason is not passenger safety, the technical condition of the stops or an effort to shorten journey times. The issue stems from regional transport funding and the division of powers between the Trenčín and Trnava self-governing regions.
Routes 30760 and 30765 are commissioned and funded by the Trenčín Self-Governing Region. However, part of each route passes through the Trnava Region, which commissions its own bus services within its territory. According to the explanation published by the transport operator and transport authority, the Trnava Region reportedly imposed a condition preventing buses funded by the Trenčín Region from carrying passengers whose journeys both begin and end entirely within the Trnava Region.
The aim is said to be preventing services funded by one region from competing with regional buses commissioned by the neighbouring region. In practice, this is enforced through bans on boarding or alighting. Passengers crossing the regional boundary can use the service, but someone travelling only between two affected stops within the Trnava Region may not be allowed to board the same bus.
The measure may make sense from an accounting and administrative perspective. For ordinary passengers, however, it creates a situation in which an empty seat goes unused while they must wait for another service or travel by car.
Is this really a new law applying throughout Slovakia?
No. Slovakia has not introduced a general ban requiring passengers to either board or get off, but not both, at bus stops. The current situation affects selected services on two specific routes and stops within the Trnava Region.
The legal basis is Act No. 332/2023 Coll. on Public Passenger Transport. It governs the authorisation of bus routes, the approval of timetables and the powers of higher territorial units. If a route extends beyond the territorial jurisdiction of one administrative authority, its establishment or modification requires the consent of the relevant authorities along the route.
Higher territorial units also issue permits for regional bus routes and approve their timetables. However, the law does not directly require passengers to only board or only get off at a particular stop. The specific arrangement emerged only when the operating conditions for the affected routes were approved.
Describing the measure as “new rules” may therefore be slightly misleading. These are not new travel rules applying to every bus in Slovakia, but a specific administrative agreement and condition between two neighbouring regions.
Drivers cannot simply ignore the rules
Although both drivers and passengers may find it absurd to leave someone standing beside a half-empty bus, drivers must operate according to the approved timetable and conditions of carriage. They cannot make their own decision at each stop.
If a driver allowed passengers to board or get off contrary to the stop’s designated rules, the operator could breach the conditions under which the route is operated. Passengers should therefore not direct their anger at the drivers. In this case, they are merely implementing the decisions made by the transport authorities.
The situation would be different if a driver refused to let someone board or get off at a stop where the timetable permits it. In that case, passengers should record the route number, service number, date, time, direction of travel and stop name, and then contact the operator.
How can you find out whether you may board or get off?
Before travelling on routes 30760 and 30765, passengers should check the current timetable valid from 15 July 2026. Particular attention should be paid to the symbols and explanatory notes shown next to the times of individual services.
It is not enough simply to look up a bus departure from a stop. A journey planner may show that the vehicle passes through or stops there, while the timetable may also contain a restriction on boarding or alighting.
Passengers should check:
- whether boarding the selected service is permitted at the stop,
- whether getting off is permitted at the destination stop,
- whether the restriction applies on a weekday, at the weekend or on a public holiday,
- whether the bus serves the destination stop at all,
- where the nearest stop permitting passengers to get off is located.
Regular commuters would be wise to save the specific service, not just the route number. Two buses on the same route may not follow exactly the same stopping rules.
Passengers fear the rules will drive even more people away from buses
The change has prompted numerous critical and ironic reactions on social media. People have mainly pointed to the contradiction between efforts to attract more passengers to public transport and a measure that makes bus travel more complicated.
Public transport is attractive when it is simple and predictable. People naturally expect that if a bus stops at a designated bus stop, they can either board or get off. Having to check special restrictions for every service may undermine trust in the entire system.
The restriction may particularly affect people without cars, older people and residents of smaller communities. Someone needing to make a short journey between two neighbouring stops may be forced to wait for a bus commissioned by the other region, even though a suitable service with available capacity has just stopped in front of them.
According to available statements, the regions are continuing negotiations to resolve the situation. Possible outcomes could include revised funding arrangements, coordinated timetables or an agreement allowing passengers to use the services without the current restrictions.

The bus stops, but it may not take you
The case of the routes between Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Vrbové and Piešťany shows how a conflict between administrative boundaries and transport funding can affect ordinary people. A bus physically passes through a community, stops at the bus stop and has empty seats, yet passengers may still not be allowed to use it.
This is not a nationwide change applying throughout Slovakia, but a local restriction affecting selected services. For the passengers concerned, however, the outcome is the same: before every journey, they must carefully check not only the departure time, but also whether the bus will allow them to board and get off where they need to.
