Between medieval city walls and the Nordic startup boom, Tallinn manages to be both at once. If you have two days, this tried-and-tested plan will help you see the essentials—without getting lost in tourist clichés.
Why Tallinn?
Tallinn’s Old Town has been on the UNESCO list since 1997 and is one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe. (whc.unesco.org) You can reach the Estonian capital on direct or low-cost flights (from Vienna: 2 h 10 min), and the city centre is just 15 minutes from the airport by tram. An ideal destination for a long weekend.
Day 1 – The Historic Heart and Imperial Gardens
Morning: Toompea, a symbol of Estonian statehood
- Toompea Castle – the seat of the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu). The complex evolved from a fortress to a governor’s residence and finally to a unique expressionist parliament building from 1922. (riigikogu.ee)
- Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – an Orthodox cathedral completed in 1900 as a statement of Imperial Russia’s influence. Today it provides a striking backdrop to Lossi plats. (visitestonia.com)
- Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms – free and just a few minutes on foot; views over the Old Town’s red rooftops and the harbour.

Tip: If you’re into history, book a free guided tour of the parliament (Riigikogu). Spots fill up fast. (riigikogu.ee)
Lunch: Balti Jaama Turg
The city’s largest market has been modernised—street food on the ground floor, farm produce and Nordic design one level up. Open Mon–Sat 9 am–7 pm, Sun 9 am–5 pm. (en.astri.ee)
Afternoon: Kadriorg Palace & Park
This baroque palace was commissioned by Russian Tsar Peter I in 1718 for his wife Catherine. (visitestonia.com) It’s the centrepiece of a 70-hectare park, which is also home to the Kumu Art Museum—the largest contemporary art exhibition space in the Baltics.

Evening: Telliskivi Creative City and Kalamaja
Former industrial sites are now filled with street art, small design shops, craft-beer bars and alternative theatres. A great spot for dinner and nightlife. (telliskivi.cc)
Day 2 – Maritime History and High-Up Thrills
Morning: Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam)
Housed in concrete seaplane hangars from 1916, the museum features 200 exhibits, including the 1937 submarine Lembit and the icebreaker Suur Tõll. (meremuuseum.ee) Kids will love the interactive simulators; booking online saves time.
Lunch: Noblessner & Nordic cuisine
Former submarine docks turned into a waterfront promenade lined with restaurants—perfect for trying Baltic salmon or Estonia’s famous rye beer.

Afternoon: Tallinn TV Tower + Pirita
Estonia’s tallest structure (314 m) offers an observation deck at 170 m and a glass-floor adrenaline rush. (teletorn.ee) A few stops further in Pirita, you can stroll along the sandy beach or visit the ruins of a 15th-century convent.
Evening: Back to the Middle Ages
Explore the bastion tunnels beneath the city walls, then end the night with local craft beer at the underground Beer House on Dunkri Street.
Optional trips if you have an extra day
- Lahemaa National Park – Viru bog boardwalks and wooden lookout towers for spotting moose.
- Tallinn–Helsinki ferry – 2 hours, 11 departures daily; ideal for a one-day “two capitals in one weekend” trip.

Quick final tips
- When to go? Summer (June–August) brings the “white nights”; December winter, in turn, is famous for its Christmas markets.
- Getting around: A 72-hour city pass (€16) is valid on trams, buses and trolleybuses.
- Money: Estonia uses the euro; card payments are common—even at markets.
- Don’t leave without: Estonian street-sold kohuke (chocolate-coated curd snack bars) and võileib (open-faced sandwiches) are local classics.
