Arguments over the black ball often come down to familiar house rules: the opposite pocket, the same pocket as the last ball, or a designated corner. Under the official World Pool Association rules for 8-ball, none of these restrictions applies automatically.
Under official WPA rules, a player who has cleared their group may nominate any of the table’s six pockets for the 8-ball. The selected ball and pocket must be clear before the shot, and the 8-ball must be legally pocketed there. Potting it in another pocket, potting it early or committing a foul while sinking it loses the rack. Which pocket must the 8-ball go into?
You may choose any pocket when the 8-ball becomes your legal object ball. It does not have to go into:
- the pocket opposite the one used for your final solid or stripe;
- the same pocket as your final group ball;
- a particular corner pocket;
- a pocket selected at the beginning of the rack.
Those requirements are house-rule variations, not part of standard WPA 8-ball. Under the official rules, shots other than the break are called shots. Once you have cleared your assigned group, the 8-ball becomes the ball you call. ([wpapool.com](https://www.wpapool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/2026.01.02-WPA-Rules.pdf?utm_source=openai))
For example, if you have no striped balls left and the simplest route sends the 8-ball into a side pocket, you may call that side pocket. If the shot is legal and the 8-ball drops there, you win the rack.
How to call the 8-ball correctly
A standard call identifies the intended object ball and intended pocket. You do not normally need to describe every detail of the shot, such as the number of cushions, incidental contacts or the exact route the ball will take.
An obvious straight shot may not require a verbal declaration under standard call-shot procedure. Nevertheless, explicitly calling or pointing to the pocket is the safest practice when playing the 8-ball. It removes doubt for your opponent, referee and spectators.
If you call one corner but the 8-ball travels into another pocket after a deflection, you lose the rack. The fact that the ball was pocketed does not make the shot successful: it must enter the called pocket. When are you allowed to play the 8-ball?
In a normal rack, each player is assigned either balls 1–7 or balls 9–15. You may play the 8-ball as your called object ball only after your entire assigned group has been cleared from the table.
Pocketing the 8-ball before that point loses the rack. A player cannot deliberately sink it early and claim a win simply because the ball entered a pocket.
The practical sequence is straightforward:
- Clear all seven balls in your assigned group.
- Choose a pocket for the 8-ball.
- Make the intended ball and pocket clear.
- Pocket the 8-ball without committing a foul.
When does an 8-ball shot lose the rack?
Under the WPA rules, a player loses the rack if they:
- pocket the 8-ball before clearing their group;
- pocket it in a pocket other than the called pocket;
- commit a foul while pocketing the 8-ball;
- drive the 8-ball off the table.
These loss-of-rack provisions do not apply to the break in the same way, because the opening shot has its own rules. ([wpapool.com](https://www.wpapool.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/2026.01.02-WPA-Rules.pdf?utm_source=openai))
What if you foul but the 8-ball stays on the table?
A foul made while attempting the 8-ball is not automatically a loss if the 8-ball remains on the table. Instead, the normal foul penalty applies, generally giving the incoming player cue-ball in hand.
The crucial difference is whether the 8-ball was pocketed. If it drops during the same shot on which the shooter fouls—for example, by scratching the cue ball—the shooter loses the rack.
What happens if the 8-ball goes in on the break?
Pocketing the 8-ball on a legal break is not an automatic win under WPA rules. The breaker may choose between:
- having the 8-ball spotted and continuing from the existing table position; or
- re-racking the balls and breaking again.
A break on which the 8-ball is pocketed together with a foul is handled differently: the opponent receives the choices specified by the break rules. In either case, the common house rule declaring the 8-ball on the break an instant victory is not the official WPA standard. Why do players remember different rules?
8-ball is played extensively in pubs, clubs, recreation rooms and homes, often without a referee or written rules. Local conventions have therefore become deeply established. “Last pocket,” “opposite pocket” and “8-ball on the break wins” can all be valid conditions for a friendly game if everyone accepts them beforehand.
They should not, however, be presented as universal rules. The WPA publishes the international rules for competitive pool, including a dedicated section governing 8-ball. The current official rulebook listed by the WPA took effect on 15 September 2025. ([wpapool.com](https://wpapool.com/rules/?utm_source=openai))
Agree on the rules before breaking
When playing informally, settle any local variations before the opening break. In particular, confirm:
- whether you are using WPA call-shot rules;
- whether obvious shots must still be verbally called;
- whether any last-pocket or opposite-pocket restriction applies;
- how an 8-ball pocketed on the break will be handled.
If the game is being played under official WPA 8-ball rules, the answer is simple: clear your group, choose and call any pocket, then legally sink the 8-ball into that pocket.
