Who Is Rory Sabbatini?

Rory Mario Trevor Sabbatini is a professional golfer born in Durban, South Africa, who has represented Slovakia since 2019. He came to the attention of the wider public mainly thanks to his historic silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, but he has behind him a long career that includes PGA Tour wins and appearances in the most prestigious tournaments in the world. In golf circles, he is known for his competitiveness, precise iron play, and the ability to produce low scores in decisive moments. The PGA Tour publishes his official statistics and biography.

The road to representing Slovakia

Sabbatini obtained Slovak citizenship in December 2018. The reason was not only his family—his wife, Martina Štofčíková, is Slovak—but also his ambition to help develop golf in a country with a growing yet still young player base. Reputable media outlets and sports websites reported on the granting of his citizenship at the time; Sabbatini later explained that the decision was not made solely for the chance to compete at the Olympics, but also out of a desire to help popularize the sport in Slovakia.

Tokyo 2020: silver for Slovakia and an Olympic record 61

The biggest achievement in Slovak golf came on August 1, 2021, at Kasumigaseki Country Club. In the final round, Sabbatini shot a 61 (−10), which is the official Olympic record in men’s golf, and jumped to second overall (−17). American Xander Schauffele held on to gold by one stroke. The record round and the result are confirmed by official Olympic sources and international coverage.

Six PGA Tour wins and long-term consistency

Even before the Slovak chapter of his career, Sabbatini built a strong name on the PGA Tour, where between 2000 and 2011 he won six tournaments, including the Honda Classic. At his peak, he also climbed the world rankings and regularly played in majors and team competitions. A complete overview of his results and career milestones is available in his official player profile.

Ties to Slovakia: clubs, community, and junior support

After gaining citizenship, Sabbatini has been actively involved in Slovakia’s golf scene, appearing at local events and supporting junior activities. His European (DP World Tour) profile lists a connection to Penati Golf Club, which hosts prestigious events and where he has also previously teed it up at the Penati Slovak Open. His presence and media reach help raise golf’s visibility among young players.

What made the Tokyo performance special

Shooting 61 in a final round under Olympic pressure is exceptionally rare. That day, Sabbatini combined accurate long game, a productive putter, and confident decision-making on the greens. The record 61 is also recognized as the official Olympic record at the Summer Games, further underlining the historic value of his medal run for Slovakia.

Impact on Slovak golf

The silver medal brought Slovakia enormous publicity in a sport that had long been growing more quietly at home. The success strengthened media interest, attracted new people to the game, and created a positive story that clubs and coaches could lean on when recruiting young players. Sabbatini has repeatedly returned to domestic events and works with kids, giving real substance to his decision to represent Slovakia.

Trivia and facts

Sabbatini is an “evergreen pro”—he lives in the U.S., but has family ties to Slovakia and has long said his goal is to leave a mark beyond just the numbers on the scoreboard. In Tokyo, his wife Martina helped him as his caddie, which gave the story a warm family dimension and resonated in the media much like the record score did. (
