
Almost everyone has experienced it. You are sitting on a train, standing in line or walking down the street when, for no apparent reason, you suddenly get the uneasy feeling that someone is watching you. You turn your head and catch someone looking in your direction. It is even stranger when the same feeling arises at home, in the dark or somewhere you would not expect anyone to be.
The feeling that someone is watching us probably does not come from a “sixth sense.” The human brain is exceptionally sensitive to faces, eyes, movement and potential social threats, and it can process signals that we do not consciously notice. Moreover, we remember the occasions when we turned around and actually caught someone looking far better than the many false alarms.
The feeling that “someone is watching me” even has its own history
The idea that people can sense someone else’s gaze without seeing them is not a new internet phenomenon. Psychologist Edward Bradford Titchener was already examining it in the late 19th century.
In 1898, he published a short paper in Science titled The “Feeling of Being Stared At.” He became interested in the subject after students claimed they could sense when someone was staring at their back or the nape of their neck. Titchener tested the idea experimentally, but his trials produced no convincing evidence that people could detect a gaze through some unknown sense.
The term scopaesthesia, or the “psychic staring effect,” later came to be used for the supposed ability to perceive a gaze without the help of the known senses. It still appears in parapsychology, but the existence of a reliable extrasensory mechanism that would allow someone to feel another person’s eyes on their back has not been confirmed by any generally accepted scientific explanation.
What happens in the brain without any paranormal ability is far more interesting.
The human brain pays exceptional attention to eyes
Another person’s eyes provide us with an enormous amount of information. From their gaze, we can estimate where their attention is directed, what has caught their interest and often what they are likely to do in the next few seconds.
We do not even have to think about it consciously.
Research into social vision shows that, under suitable conditions, people can determine the direction of another person’s gaze fairly accurately. Someone else’s gaze can also automatically shift our own attention toward whatever they are looking at. The brain therefore processes eyes not simply as a feature of the face, but as an important social signal.
Direct gaze is something special to the brain
The difference between someone looking beside you and someone looking directly at you may amount to only a tiny shift in eye position. Yet the psychological difference can be enormous.
Direct eye contact affects attention, memory, emotional responses and physiological arousal. To the brain, it means something very specific: the other person is not merely paying attention to their surroundings. Their attention may be focused on me.
A review of scientific studies on eye contact describes a whole range of effects that direct gaze has on attention, cognition and emotional responses.
This may explain why we sometimes experience a stranger’s brief glance so intensely, even when it lasts only a moment.
How can we “sense” someone when we are not looking at them at all?
This is where the most interesting part of the phenomenon begins. Someone may genuinely feel that they saw or heard absolutely nothing. But that does not mean the brain received no information.
A large proportion of sensory processing occurs without its results ever entering conscious awareness.
Peripheral vision detects more than we realize
A person does not have to be directly in front of us for us to register their presence. In the periphery of our visual field, we may detect the movement of a head, the contrast of a face, a silhouette, a change in light or a body turning.
Something strange can then happen: the brain evaluates the information as important and prompts us to turn around, even though we are unaware of the original stimulus.
Subjectively, the result feels something like this:
“Out of nowhere, I felt that someone was watching me.”
In reality, however, it may have been a very faint visual cue that the brain detected before we could consciously identify it.
Hearing also plays a role
A similar effect can arise from sound. Rustling clothes, footsteps, a moving chair, a change in the direction of someone’s voice or sudden silence nearby can reveal a person’s presence.
An individual sound may be so subtle that we do not even realize afterward that we heard it. The brain, however, combines that information with other clues, potentially producing a feeling of heightened alertness or an urge to look behind us.
But why do we so often turn around at the exact moment someone is looking?
This is precisely why the phenomenon is so convincing.
Imagine that over the course of a week, you get a vague feeling ten times that someone is watching you. Nine times, you turn around and see nothing noteworthy. You quickly forget those occasions.
The tenth time, you turn around and, at that very second, meet the eyes of the person standing behind you.
The moment is striking, strange and emotionally engaging, so you remember it.
A few days later, your memory may retain mainly the successful hit: “I knew someone was watching me.”
The nine unsuccessful attempts play virtually no role in that memory.
The person may have looked at you only after you moved
There is an even simpler trick, one that Titchener already mentioned.
Imagine someone standing behind you. They do not have to be watching you; they only need to have you within their field of vision. For some reason, you begin to turn your head.
Movement naturally attracts attention, so the other person looks at you.
By the time you finish turning, their eyes are already directed toward you.
From your perspective, the result is clear: you felt someone watching you, turned around and caught them in the act.
But you have no way of knowing whether they had already been watching you for five seconds or looked only in response to your movement.
The brain would rather raise a false alarm than miss a threat
From an evolutionary perspective, it may be advantageous for an organism to respond even to uncertain signs of potential danger.
If a branch snaps in the bushes and someone assumes something is there when there is not, the consequences are minor. But if they ignore a potential danger when it really is there, the consequences may be much worse.
A similar principle applies to modern threat perception.
Experimental research shows that expecting danger can influence our perceptual decision-making. Although heightened vigilance can speed up the detection of a real threat, it also encourages us to misinterpret neutral stimuli as dangerous.
For the brain, waiting for absolute certainty may therefore not be the ideal strategy.
A shadow, movement in the periphery, a distant sound or the sense that someone is nearby may be enough. Attention intensifies, creating an urge to check the situation.
Why this feeling is stronger in the dark
In a dark room, on an empty street or in a forest, we have less precise visual information available. Paradoxically, that does not necessarily make the brain calmer.
Quite the opposite: ambiguous stimuli allow for more possible interpretations.
A coat hanging on a door may briefly resemble a person. A moving branch may look like a moving figure. A reflection in a window may resemble a face. The brain has to work with incomplete data and tries to decide which interpretation is safest.
If we are also frightened, tired or already expecting danger, the threshold for raising the alarm may be lower.
This is also one reason why, after watching a horror movie, an ordinary walk down a dark hallway may suddenly feel much less pleasant than it did before the film.
Why do we sometimes feel a gaze directly on the back of our neck?
People often describe more than the abstract thought that “someone is behind me.” They mention a physical sensation on the back of the neck, tingling, tension or an unusual sensitivity of the skin.
Titchener also examined these sensations.
He pointed out that simply focusing attention on a particular part of the body can make us more aware of physical sensations that we would normally ignore. If, for example, you focus intensely on the sensation in your foot, you will probably soon notice pressure, warmth, a slight itch or a pulse that was already there.
When we think, “Someone is staring at the back of my neck,” our attention shifts to that exact area. Ordinary bodily signals may then feel far more intense and become further “evidence” that our initial feeling was correct.
Eye contact can also change our behavior
The feeling of being watched is interesting not only because it is unpleasant. Knowing that someone is observing us can change how we behave.
People naturally monitor themselves in social settings. We behave differently when we are alone at home than when we are in front of a group. The mere possibility that someone is judging our behavior can heighten self-awareness.
That is why direct gaze can be so psychologically powerful. It is not merely an image of two eyes. It conveys the information that we have become the focus of another person’s attention.
And the human brain pays exceptional attention to precisely this type of information.
So can we sense the gaze of someone standing behind a wall?
If visual, auditory and other sensory information is removed, the situation is completely different from the ordinary feeling of being watched on the street.
The idea that a gaze itself sends some as-yet-unknown signal to another person has been the subject of various experiments and parapsychological hypotheses. The results do not provide a sufficient basis for considering such an ability a confirmed human sense.
There is a much simpler explanation for most everyday experiences: our senses provide the brain with more data than we consciously realize, the brain is exceptionally sensitive to social signals, and memory favors striking successes over a large number of unremarkable errors.
This does not mean the experience itself is imaginary. The feeling can be entirely real. The only question is what causes it.
You can try a simple experiment yourself
There is a simple way to see how easily a subjective feeling can differ from actual accuracy.
You need another person and a sufficient number of trials. Sit with your back to them so that you cannot see them and so that no sounds give away what they are doing. In each round, they must use a prepared randomized list to determine whether to look at you or not.
Each time, write down only one of two options: “looking” or “not looking.”
It is important not to stop the experiment after three or four remarkable hits. A small number of trials can create an exceptionally convincing impression. Only a larger number of repetitions will show whether someone is genuinely more accurate than chance would predict.
It is even more interesting to record the result immediately. If we rely on memory alone, unusual coincidences tend to completely overshadow the times when we were wrong.
When can the feeling of being watched become unusually strong?
Occasionally feeling that someone is watching us is, in itself, a completely normal experience. Its intensity, however, can vary depending on the environment and our current psychological state.
It may be stronger, for example, when:
- we are in an unfamiliar or dark environment,
- we expect danger,
- we are stressed,
- we are very tired,
- we are surrounded by many strangers,
- we have recently experienced something unpleasant,
- someone really is watching us repeatedly.
Heightened vigilance is not automatically a problem. However, if someone persistently and intensely believes they are being watched despite repeated evidence to the contrary, or if the feeling significantly disrupts their everyday life, it is no longer merely an interesting perceptual effect, and it is sensible to discuss its cause with a qualified professional.
Why are eyes so important?
Just imagine talking to someone who looks at the ground throughout the entire conversation. Although we hear exactly the same words, the interaction feels completely different.
Eyes allow us to continuously estimate another person’s focus of attention. They reveal whether the person is looking at us, at an object beside us or at a potential threat behind our back.
The ability to react quickly to the direction of another person’s gaze therefore makes sense without any mysterious mechanism. If everyone around you suddenly looks in one direction, you will probably look there too.
And when someone’s gaze suddenly settles directly on you, the brain has good reason to pay attention.

This short explanation of the phenomenon shows how the brain can use subtle cues and why the resulting feeling can be so convincing.
Is sensing someone’s gaze a sixth sense?
Based on the available evidence, we do not need to assume the existence of an additional human sense to explain the ordinary feeling of being watched. We already have highly capable vision, hearing and peripheral vision, as well as an attention system and a brain specialized in recognizing socially significant stimuli.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the entire phenomenon is not that people might be able to sense an invisible gaze.
What is more fascinating is that the brain can detect a tiny detail we do not consciously notice at all, combine it with previous experiences, assess a possible danger and prompt us to turn our head. When we then actually find a pair of eyes directed our way, the whole process seems almost supernatural.
In reality, it may be a demonstration of just how much of the world our brain processes before we are even aware that we have detected something.
