Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive body-contouring method that selectively cools fatty tissue so that damaged fat cells gradually break down and are eliminated by the body over the course of weeks. The principle is based on cells’ differing sensitivity to cold—adipocytes respond to low temperatures sooner than skin or muscle. The technology entered clinical practice after preclinical and early clinical studies and later received regulatory clearances in the US for non-invasive body contouring technologies (FDA – Non-invasive body contouring technologies. A review of clinical data shows that cryolipolysis leads to a measurable reduction in subcutaneous fat in treated areas without surgery.
Which areas it’s best for and who is a good candidate
The most commonly treated areas are the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, upper arms, and the submental area (under the chin). This method targets localized fat pockets—it is not a weight-loss solution for overweight or obesity. An ideal candidate has a stable weight, a healthy lifestyle, and expects mild to moderate contour improvement rather than dramatic weight loss. A professional consultation and realistic goal-setting help—evidence-based literature describes average changes in fat-layer thickness on the order of tens of percent in a given area, not overall body-weight reduction.
How the procedure works and what you’ll feel
An applicator placed on the skin creates suction and controlled cooling. During the first few minutes, you typically feel pressure and intense cold; later, the area often becomes numb. One session takes about 35–60 minutes per “suctioned” zone, depending on the applicator size. After the procedure, you can return to normal activities; temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or skin numbness are common and usually resolve within days to a few weeks.
When you’ll see results and how many sessions you need
The body processes damaged fat cells gradually, so the first changes are usually visible after 4–6 weeks, with fuller results typically within 2–3 months. The literature reports an average reduction in fat-layer thickness of about 10–25% in the treated area as measured by ultrasound or calipers, and the outcome can be enhanced with a second session after several weeks.
Risks and side effects (including PAH)
Most commonly, these are temporary skin reactions—redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising, or short-term numbness. A rare but documented complication is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH): instead of shrinking, a firmer, enlarged area of fatty tissue develops in the treated region. PAH appears weeks to months after the procedure and usually requires surgical correction; however, it is a rare event described in dermatology and plastic-surgery sources.
Who should avoid cryolipolysis (contraindications)
Cryolipolysis is not suitable for conditions involving cold sensitivity, especially cryoglobulinemia, cold urticaria, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, and cold agglutinin disease. Caution is also warranted with hernias in the area, impaired skin sensation, or recent surgery at the planned treatment site. All of these conditions should be discussed with a physician before the procedure.
Price in Slovakia: what to expect
The final cost depends on the number of “suction cycles” (zones), the applicator size, and the clinic’s level. As a rough guide, one session for a smaller area typically ranges from about €90 to €200 per zone; packages or multiple applications are more cost-effective. For larger areas and medical clinics using premium technology, the price may be higher. For an idea, see an overview of prices and the factors that influence them.
Cryolipolysis vs. liposuction and other techniques
Cryolipolysis involves no incisions, anesthesia, or downtime from work, but it offers limited, localized improvement and results build gradually. Surgical liposuction can remove more fat at once and contour larger areas more precisely, but it involves anesthesia, recovery time, and higher risks. Alternatives include heat-based methods (laser, radiofrequency) or injectable fat-dissolving treatments for smaller areas. The best option for you depends on fat-layer thickness, skin elasticity, and expectations—so a medical consultation makes sense.
Tips before and after treatment
Maintain a stable weight, drink enough fluids, and avoid starting new “yo-yo” diets so you can maintain your results. After the procedure, regular movement and a normal lifestyle help; this is contouring, not a replacement for exercise. Before-and-after photos will make it easier to evaluate changes objectively.
FAQ: most common questions
Will it hurt? For the first few minutes you’ll feel intense cold and pulling, then the area becomes numb. Most people tolerate the treatment well and can go straight back to work afterward.
Are the results permanent? The treated fat cells are eliminated, but the remaining ones can enlarge if you gain weight. Keeping your weight stable is key.
How many sessions do I need? Many areas respond to 1–2 sessions; with a thicker fat layer, a series spaced a few weeks apart is recommended.
Can I work out right away? Light activity is possible immediately; resume intense training as you feel able once tenderness subsides.
Is it suitable if I want to “lose weight”? No. Cryolipolysis is for contouring, not for reducing overall body weight.
