TOP 11 caves in Slovakia you have to see (current admission 2025)

Discover Slovakia from a completely different perspective—underground. I’ve selected eleven of the most beautiful show caves, offering a varied mix of ice, dripstone formations, subterranean rivers, and rare minerals. For each one, you’ll find the current admission price in euros, practical tips, and tried-and-tested interesting facts.

Dobšiná Ice Cave – a world of ice

Slovakia’s largest ice cave and part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage since 2000. The ice reaches up to 26.5 m in thickness and the temperature drops to around 0 °C. Out of the total 1,483 m, a 515 m circuit is open to visitors (≈ 30 min).
Admission 2025: €12 adults / €6 children (6–15) / €11 students, seniors; photo-video €10 (gemer.skSlovakia.travel)

Demänová Cave of Liberty – a colorful symphony of dripstone

An icon of the Low Tatras with richly varied sinter waterfalls and domes, stretching over 11 km (1.2 km accessible). You can choose the classic (60 min) or the long tour (100 min).
Admission 2025: classic €14 adults / €7 children; long €24 adults / €12 children (Nízke Tatry)

Demänová Ice Cave – a winter experience even in summer

You’ll reach it after a 20-minute uphill walk from the parking lot in Jasná. The route is 650 m long, and the temperature is around 1 °C, so bring warm clothes.
Admission 2025: €10 adults / €5 children / €9 students, seniors (Nízke Tatry)

Ochtiná Aragonite Cave – an aragonite “Milky Way”

One of only three aragonite cave systems in the world. In the Milky Way Hall, white aragonite twigs gleam like stars. The tour is short (300 m) but truly one of a kind.
Admission 2025: €10 adults / €5 children / €9 students, seniors (NP Slovenský kras)

Domica Cave – a boat ride on the underground River Styx

The largest cave in the Slovak Karst (over 5 km). On the long 930 m circuit, you also take a boat ride on the River Styx. It has been UNESCO-listed since 1995.
Admission 2025: boat tour €12 adults / €6 children; short tour €10 (NP Slovenský kras)

Gombasek Cave – fairy-tale soda straws

Admission 2025: €10 adults / €5 children / €9 students, seniors (gemer.sk)

Jasov Cave – a realm of bats and Gothic traces

The oldest show cave in Slovakia (opened to visitors in 1846). The circuit (720 m) passes cascades and bat colonies; winter counts record up to 19 species hibernating here.
Admission 2025: €10 adults / €5 children / €9 students, seniors (Miribord)

Belianska Cave – the only accessible cave in the Tatras

It has featured electric lighting since 1884. The tour takes 70 minutes, includes 874 steps, and highlights pagoda-like stalagmites.

Harmanec Cave – the “White” cave of Veľká Fatra

Snow-white limestone sinter and the enormous Great Dome (75 m high) are genuinely awe-inspiring. Count on a 1,420 m educational trail to reach the entrance.

Važec Cave – short, but highly photogenic

Although it’s only 235 m long, it hides cave bear bones and the “Moon Surface”—spotted sinter resembling a lunar landscape.

Practical tips to finish

  • Reservations: in peak season (July–August), I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before entry; tickets are typically sold 15 minutes in advance (SSJ)
  • Payment: most caves accept cash only; check in advance on the SSJ website.
  • Clothing: temperatures range from 0 °C (ice caves) to 9 °C (dripstone caves). A good sweater and sturdy shoes are worth it everywhere.
  • Photos and video: a €7–€10 fee is common, and tripods are usually prohibited.
