You pour fabric softener into the correct compartment, start the wash and, when the programme ends, almost all of it is still there. Sometimes only water remains in the drawer; other times, the laundry is missing its expected fragrance. Although these symptoms may look similar, they do not necessarily have the same cause. Before looking for an electronic fault, it is worth checking a few simple things.
If your washing machine is not dispensing fabric softener, first check that you have poured it into the correct compartment and have not exceeded the MAX mark. The most common issue is a dirty dispenser drawer, a clogged removable insert or product that is too thick. Remove the drawer, clean it according to your washing machine manual and run a rinse cycle without laundry. If the problem persists, the water supply or dispensing mechanism should be checked.
How does a washing machine dispense fabric softener from the drawer?
In a standard washing machine with a manual dispenser, fabric softener is not added at the start of the wash. The appliance directs water into the relevant compartment only during the rinse phase. The water raises the level of the mixture and, in designs with a siphon insert, the contents are then drained into the drum. This is why the insert must be clean, fitted correctly and leave enough room in the compartment for incoming water.
Not all washing machines use the same system. Models with automatic dispensing have separate tanks, sensors and dose settings. With such a model, “not dispensing fabric softener” may not indicate a mechanical fault: automatic dispensing may simply be switched off. The exact procedure therefore always depends on the model number and its user manual.
Five causes to check first
1. The fabric softener is in the wrong compartment or above the MAX mark
On dispenser drawers, the main-wash compartment is usually marked II, the prewash compartment I, and the fabric softener compartment with a flower symbol. Check the markings on your own appliance, however, as dispenser designs can vary. If the maximum level is exceeded, the contents may drain away too early or the mechanism may not work as expected.
If the fabric softener disappears before the rinse cycle, check the amount used, whether the siphon insert is fitted correctly and whether the appliance is level. Do not replace a missing insert with an improvised part. Its shape is part of the dispensing mechanism.
2. The dispenser drawer is clogged with residue
Fabric softener, detergent and dirt gradually build up in the drawer. They can clog narrow channels as well as the area above the compartment where water enters. Electrolux recommends removing the drawer, detaching the removable part of the compartment and rinsing both parts thoroughly with warm water. Also clean the area where the drawer slides in with a soft brush.
Switch off the washing machine before cleaning and follow its manual. Do not use force, sharp tools or harsh chemicals on delicate plastic tabs. If the drawer cannot be removed using the normal procedure, first locate the release catch for your specific model.
3. The fabric softener is too thick
A concentrated product may not flow properly from the compartment, especially if it mixes with old residue. Electrolux notes that some concentrated fabric softeners need to be diluted according to the packaging instructions. This does not mean every fabric softener should automatically be diluted: follow the instructions from the product and appliance manufacturers.
To check, try one dose in the amount recommended on the label. If the fabric softener drains away when the correct dose is used and the compartment is clean, the likely cause was a combination of its consistency and built-up residue.
4. Too little water is entering the dispenser drawer
If the compartment remains full of fabric softener after rinsing, check that the washing machine has an adequate water supply and whether the problem also affects the other compartments. A partially closed valve, a clogged inlet filter or an issue with the water distribution to the dispenser may be responsible. When handling the hose and filter, follow the manufacturer’s procedure and turn off the water supply beforehand.
A faulty solenoid valve or internal water distributor requires professional diagnosis. It is not advisable to dismantle the electrical parts of the washing machine merely because fabric softener remains in the drawer.
5. Automatic dispensing is switched off
On some Samsung washing machines, automatic dispensing functions are configured separately. The manufacturer states that, on selected models, the rinse dose may be set to off when delivered, or the setting may change in certain circumstances. Therefore, check the dispensing setting, the tank level and whether the product is suitable.
If your machine has an ordinary manual dispenser drawer, this setting does not apply to you. There is no need to look for it in a menu your washing machine does not have.
How to clean the fabric softener compartment step by step
First, switch off the washing machine. Remove the drawer according to the manual, press any release catch and take the removable insert out of the fabric softener compartment. Wash the individual parts with warm water, remove sticky deposits with a soft brush and rinse the channels. Also clean the upper section and the inside of the dispenser if they can be reached without removing covers.
Then return the insert to its exact original position, slide in the drawer and, as recommended by the manufacturer, run a separate rinse cycle without laundry. Watch whether water drains from the compartment. A small amount of residual water does not necessarily indicate a fault on its own, but a full compartment after every cycle is a reason for further inspection.

When does it make sense to call a technician?
If you have thoroughly cleaned the drawer, dose the fabric softener correctly and water still does not flow into the compartment, the problem may lie in the internal water distribution system, valve or dispensing system. Note down the appliance model and describe exactly whether the fabric softener remains, drains away too early or only water is left in the compartment. This will help the technician distinguish between the different scenarios.
Before arranging a repair, also check the user manual and any warranty. In most cases, the most sensible first step is a clean dispenser drawer and correct dosing, rather than blindly buying replacement parts.
