Hungary’s “musical” motorway: Road 67

In southern Hungary, there’s a stretch of expressway where ordinary tyres turn into a “speaker.” It’s not roadside loudspeakers or a hidden trick, but precisely milled grooves in the asphalt that produce a melody as you drive over them. When the driver hits the right lane position and holds roughly 80 km/h, the familiar notes of the song “A 67-es út” can be heard inside the cabin.

Where the “singing” asphalt is located

Hungary’s best-known musical road section is linked to Route 67 (in Hungarian, “67-es út”), which provides a faster connection towards Kaposvár and on to the Lake Balaton area. It’s an approximately 500-metre segment placed along the right edge of the lane, so the melody plays when the wheels roll onto the grooved part of the roadway. According to descriptions from early tests and the opening, the “cleanest” sound is at around 80 km/h, because the groove spacing is “tuned” for that speed (Vezess.hu: Már zenél a 67-es út).

People online often call this kind of solution a “musical motorway,” but in practice it’s a short, specially modified section on an ordinary road. The whole effect relies on a simple physical principle—and on the car crossing the grooves smoothly at a more or less constant speed.

How a road can play music

Asphalt grooves act like “notes”

The basics are similar to the rumble strips you see on many roads: milled or formed patterns in the surface that create sound and vibration when you drive over them. Why the melody works only at a certain speed

People often come away with the impression that the road “plays all the time,” but reality is stricter: the melody is correctly “in tune” only when the car crosses the grooves steadily. What the driver actually hears—and why it may not sound great from outside

Inside the car, the sound often feels surprisingly clear because the body, chassis, and the air in the cabin “amplify” the vibrations. It’s similar to driving on a different surface and suddenly hearing more pronounced tyre noise—except here that noise is organised into tones. From the outside, however, the effect can be less pleasant, because the sound changes with the car’s speed and distance, and for bystanders it may come across as fluctuating droning rather than a clean melody.

Why roads like this exist: a mix of engineering, marketing, and curiosity

Musical roads appear around the world in various forms, but the common denominator is always the same: a simple technology that can influence driver behaviour without major changes to infrastructure. If the melody is most audible at a particular speed, drivers have a natural incentive to hold a steady pace rather than drive in a “gas–brake” pattern. It’s also the kind of attraction that spreads virally, because you can show it in a short clip and everyone immediately gets the point.

In the Hungarian case there’s an extra layer: the song is iconic, and the link between the track’s title and the road’s designation is so straightforward that it became a symbolic “signature” of the whole project. Even people who normally wouldn’t pay attention to transport infrastructure suddenly remember the road number and the region where it is.

How to try it safely (so the music doesn’t become a problem)

The most important thing is to drive as if the attraction didn’t exist and treat the music as a side effect. It’s not worth “hunting” for the grooves by swerving sharply—those manoeuvres are among the riskiest on expressways. If you can, stay smoothly in the right lane, watch the traffic situation, and keep to the speed limit and a safe following distance, because not every driver ahead of you wants to experiment with the same discipline.

A small psychological point helps too: when you focus on the melody, it’s easier to miss what’s happening around you. That’s why it’s better to leave any filming to a passenger—or simply enjoy it without your phone and without changing speed just to get a “nicer chorus.” Music from the asphalt should be fun, not the reason you stop paying attention to the road.
