Apple’s first foldable iPhone presents buyers with a genuinely different choice. The iPhone 18 Pro is a conventional 6.3-inch flagship built around photography and portability, while the iPhone Duo unfolds into a 7.6-inch workspace designed for multitasking, video and games. Choose the iPhone Duo only if its larger display and side-by-side apps will materially change how you use your phone every day.

Both phones use the A20 Pro chip, offer ProMotion displays with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, reach a claimed 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness and carry an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating. The Duo’s folding screen is its main reason to exist
The iPhone Duo has a relatively compact 5.4-inch outer display for routine tasks. Opening it reveals a 7.6-inch OLED panel that Apple says provides 50% more screen area than the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max. That additional space enables Split View, allowing two apps to run side by side. You can drag an image from Photos into Mail, view shared content beside a video call or save frequently used app pairs. These capabilities make the Duo potentially useful for documents, spreadsheets, messaging while browsing, photo editing and entertainment. The trade-off is a less conventional shape. At 254g, the Duo is 43g heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro and even 5g heavier than the Pro Max. Its 5.4-inch outer display may feel cramped to people accustomed to modern large-screen phones, meaning frequent unfolding could become necessary rather than optional. Apple Pencil support is another potential advantage, but it should not influence an immediate purchase decision. The iPhone 18 Pro has the substantially better camera system
The iPhone 18 Pro carries three 48MP rear cameras. Its main camera has four selectable aperture settings — f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0 — while its dedicated tetraprism telephoto provides a native 4x view and an 8x optical-quality option. Apple also includes controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram, alongside ProRAW, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and a LiDAR scanner. The Duo has two 48MP rear cameras: a main camera and an ultra-wide. Its 2x setting is a crop from the main sensor rather than a dedicated telephoto camera, and digital zoom stops at 10x, compared with 40x for still photography on the Pro. Its folding design does create some distinctive camera features. Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see the composition on the outer screen, while the rear cameras can be used for higher-quality selfies. The partially folded phone can also support itself for group pictures, video calls and time-lapse recording without a separate stand. Those conveniences are valuable, but buyers choosing primarily on image quality and creative control should favour the iPhone 18 Pro. The Duo’s camera system is designed to exploit the foldable body; the Pro’s is designed to cover more shooting situations.
Performance should be similar, but cooling still matters
Both models use the same A20 Pro configuration, including a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Both also use vapour-chamber cooling and support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and USB 3 data transfers at up to 10Gbps. ([apple.com](https://www.apple.com/iphone-duo/specs/))
That should put everyday responsiveness in the same general class, but identical processors do not guarantee identical sustained performance. The Duo distributes its components across two thin halves and uses a dual-battery architecture, whereas the Pro has a conventional unibody layout. Independent testing will be needed to establish how each phone handles prolonged gaming, video exports and other demanding workloads.
Battery claims are more complicated than they appear
Apple rates the US eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro for up to 24 hours of typical use or 36 hours of stored video playback. The Duo is also rated for up to 24 hours of typical use, but its video figure changes dramatically with the screen: up to 44 hours on the outer display or 31 hours on the larger inner display. These figures do not prove that the Duo lasts longer. A small outer screen playing a local video represents a very different workload from multitasking on the 7.6-inch panel. Buyers should treat the 24-hour typical-use estimate as more informative until comparable real-world battery tests are available.
The Pro also charges faster on paper, reaching 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible 60W-capable wired adapter. The Duo takes around 20 minutes under similar conditions. Battery specifications can vary by hardware version. For example, Apple rates the UK iPhone 18 Pro, which retains a physical SIM tray, for up to 23 hours of typical use and 34 hours of video playback — slightly below the US eSIM-only version. The Duo carries more first-generation risk
Apple gives both devices an IP68 rating for immersion at a maximum depth of six metres for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions. The Duo uses a grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield on its exterior surfaces and a hinge assembled from more than 100 components. An IP rating does not remove the inherent complexity of a flexible display and mechanical hinge. Apple’s published specifications do not provide a guaranteed number of folding cycles, and there are not yet independent long-term tests of the inner screen, hinge or nano-texture surface. That does not mean the Duo will be unreliable, but it does make its long-term behaviour harder to predict.
The iPhone 18 Pro can still be damaged, particularly when dropped, but its rigid screen and lack of a hinge make it the lower-risk choice for buyers who keep a phone for several years. AppleCare+ may be especially worth considering for the Duo, although coverage options, fees and theft-and-loss protection differ by country.
Prices vary by market, but the Duo premium is consistently high
Apple’s starting prices below are for 256GB models. US prices normally exclude sales tax, while UK and Australian prices include VAT or GST. Canadian sales taxes are added according to the province or territory.

The foldable consequently costs around two-thirds more than the Pro in several major markets, despite sharing its processor. Buyers are paying primarily for the hinge, dual displays, multitasking interface and unusual form factor rather than a general performance upgrade. Availability: the iPhone 18 Pro arrives first
As of September 12, 2026, iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders are open in more than 65 countries and regions, with retail availability beginning September 18. A second group of markets follows on September 25. The two phones are not identical in every country, and importing one can create avoidable compatibility issues.

Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if you:
- Want the stronger and more flexible camera system.
- Regularly use telephoto zoom or professional photo and video formats.
- Prefer a lighter, thinner phone with a conventional shape.
- Plan to keep the device for several years.
- Do not need two apps displayed side by side.
- Want to spend substantially less.
Buy the iPhone Duo if you:
- Will regularly use the 7.6-inch display for work, video, reading or games.
- Want genuine two-app multitasking on an iPhone.
- Can use its outer display for lighter tasks and unfold it when needed.
- Value rear-camera selfies, subject previews and hands-free shooting.
- Are comfortable with Touch ID instead of Face ID.
- Accept first-generation uncertainty and a roughly 67–71% price premium in the markets compared above.
Verdict
The iPhone 18 Pro is the more sensible flagship for most international buyers. It has the same core processor as the Duo, a markedly better camera system, faster charging, lower weight and a much lower starting price. Its conventional design is also easier to recommend before independent durability testing has taken place.
The iPhone Duo is the more interesting device, but interest alone does not make it better value. It is worth buying if the folding display can replace some of your tablet use or make mobile multitasking meaningfully easier. Anyone attracted mainly by the novelty should wait for independent reviews — and preferably longer-term hinge and screen testing — before spending foldable-phone money.
