Why is it worth coming?
Cascades of more than twenty waterfalls, ladders wedged between limestone walls, and a mysterious tale of the treasure of a legendary highwayman—these are what make Jánošíkove Diery one of the most visited trails in the Malá Fatra National Park. They lie in the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve, which protects a unique karst landscape and more than 2,000 animal species, including rare butterflies and alpine plants (npmalafatra.sk).
Three sections of the gorges
Diery consists of three interconnected sections:
- Lower Diery – the easiest, accessible even for capable kids.
- New Diery – a short but steeper canyon with several footbridges.
- Upper Diery – the most demanding stretch with the highest concentration of waterfalls (up to 9) (Trekhunt).
The entire system is cut through by the Hlboký (Dierový) Stream, which shaped the gorges into their present form (Hotel Diery).
Recommended routes
- Small loop (Lower + New Diery)
Length 4 km, ↑ +270 m, time ≈ 2 h 30 min. An ideal family outing, with the most ladders in the Lower Diery. - Big loop (all three Diery sections)
Length 8 km, ↑ +560 m, time ≈ 4–5 h. The most popular option; from the Upper Diery the trail returns via the Podžiar saddle. - Viewpoint on Malý Rozsutec (1,343 m a.s.l.)
Length 12 km, ↑ +930 m, time ≈ 6–7 h. Your reward is a panorama of the entire Malá Fatra ridge.
Maps and navigation
The official map of the educational trail is right at the start by Hotel Diery; we recommend taking a photo of it or downloading it as a PDF (link: map of the Rozsutec NNR) (npmalafatra.sk). You can also find an interactive version on Mapy.cz or AllTrails; it lets you plan elevation gain and time in advance (sample route: AllTrails: Jánošíkove Diery) (AllTrails.com).
Parking and transport
The most convenient option is the supervised parking lot at Hotel Diery (≈200 spaces, €5–6 / day, with refreshments and toilets available) (hotel-diery.com). Another smaller parking area can be found in the hamlet of Biely Potok.
If you’re coming without a car, you can get here by Arriva Liorbus from Žilina (about 40 min, €2–3) — get off at the stop “Terchová, Biely Potok, koliba” (Rome2Rio).
Seasonal closures and safety
- The Upper Diery section may be closed (together with the summit area of Veľký Rozsutec) from 1 March to 15 June for nature protection and raptor nesting (Terchová).
- After rain, the ladders are slippery; sturdy footwear, gloves, and a helmet for children are also recommended by the National Park Administration.
- In winter months, expect ice—microspikes and a via ferrata set significantly increase safety.
The outlaw legend
According to local lore, Juraj Jánošík hid part of his loot in the rock crevices of the Diery; when he was captured, he supposedly blocked the place forever with a boulder “so that no one would reach the riches who has no right to them” (vratnafree.jecool.net, Terchová). That’s why the gorges are called “Jánošík’s.”

A short 3-minute highlight reel will take you through the most beautiful sections of both the Small and Big loops:
Useful tips before you go
- There’s no mobile signal in the deepest parts of the Upper Diery; an offline map on your phone comes in handy.
- The Podžiar snack bar (halfway along the route) offers bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese) and cold beer, but expect queues in peak season.
- The best light for photographing waterfalls is usually before 10:00, before the sun reaches deeper into the gorge.
Conclusion
Jánošíkove Diery are an ideal mix of adventure and the romance of Slovak nature—from an easy family loop to an all-day hike with an ascent to the rocky throne of Malý Rozsutec. With good preparation, respect for nature, and a pinch of outlaw spirit, every hiker will enjoy them.
